The Best Restaurants in Welland: A Local’s Guide

best restaurants in welland

Welland punches above its weight for food.

For a city of 58,000, there’s a surprising amount worth eating: a wood-fired Italian spot that consistently ranks #1 in town, a brewery and pizza kitchen on the canal, a diner that’s been here since 1947, and a handful of newer places quietly doing some of the most interesting cooking in Niagara.

This is our shortlist. The places we send people. The ones worth the drive from Hamilton or St. Catharines.

We focused on independents over chains, places that consistently rank in the top tier on Tripadvisor, Yelp, and Restaurant Guru, and spots locals actually talk about. We didn’t include any restaurant we couldn’t verify is open and operating.

Best for a special occasion

Matteo’s Ristorante

The consensus #1 restaurant in Welland.

Family-owned, fresh pasta, wood-burning pizza oven, intimate dining room. Matt (the owner) often works the floor and walks tables through the menu personally.

Open Tuesday through Saturday, 5pm to 10pm. Reservations strongly recommended on weekends.

What to order: the wood-fired pizzas, the carbonara, the antipasto plate, and the phyllo-wrapped cheesecake baked in the wood-fired oven for dessert.

Cured Tapas & Cocktails

Technically in Fonthill, but close enough that Wellanders consider it theirs.

Formerly Cured Charcuterie & Cocktails. The original owner Christie sold the business in 2025; new owners Cam Sacco and Ernie Gonzalez took over and tweaked the name slightly while keeping the format. Tapas-style small plates, charcuterie boards, and craft cocktails.

Good for: date nights, drinks before dinner, a long evening of small plates with someone you like.

What to order: any of the charcuterie boards (they rotate selections monthly), the espresso martini.

Best canal-side patio

Bridgewater Brewery

Downtown Welland’s anchor.

A working brewery and taproom along the recreational canal, with a wide patio, a dog-friendly back patio, and a Neapolitan-style pizza oven inside. The beer is brewed on site, the food menu leans pub-elevated (pretzel buns, lobster dip, fried chicken sandwich, steak frites, wood-fired pizzas).

Closed Mondays in the off-season and Tuesdays year-round, so check before you go.

What to order: the Hombre Mexican Style Lager, the Korean-style fried chicken sandwich, the Mediterranean pizza, any of their flights.

M.T. Bellies Tap & Grillhouse

Welland’s standby.

Family-style grill house, extensive menu (burgers, wings, pasta, steaks, ribs, salads, vegetarian options), private rooms for groups of 15+, kids menu. Generous portions, casual atmosphere, the kind of place where the staff knows the regulars.

Open Monday through Sunday, 11:30am to 10pm.

Best comfort food

Blue Star Restaurant

A Welland institution since 1947.

Recently changed hands. Trish and Peter Chiasson took over from longtime owners John and Renée Plentai in 2024 and have kept the menu, the staff, and the spirit largely intact. Old-school diner energy. Comfort food done well. Famous for pies.

Notable past visitors include former Prime Ministers Pierre Trudeau and Stephen Harper, according to the restaurant’s own history.

Open Tuesday through Sunday, 7am to 8pm. Closed Mondays.

What to order: the broasted chicken, the cabbage rolls, the pierogies, the homemade pies, the hot beef sandwich.

Best breakfast

Benedict’s Breakfast

The breakfast spot in Welland.

Family-owned, open since 2010. New owners Aphrodite and Katarina took over recently and have continued the format that built the reputation. Specialty is, predictably, eggs benedict; the menu also includes pancakes, French toast, omelettes, and lunch options.

Cash-preferred at certain points historically, so worth checking before you go. Open 7am to 2pm daily.

What to order: any of the eggs benedict variations (the Philly Steak Benedict is a standout), the classic breakfast with home fries, the pancakes.

Best international

Everest Tandoori Kitchen

The best Indian food in Welland, and one of the few spots in town doing Indo-Chinese (Hakka) cuisine alongside North Indian and Nepalese dishes.

Run by chef and family with deep ties to traditional cooking. Generous portions, fair prices, weekday Thali lunch special is a steal.

What to order: butter chicken, chicken biryani, momos, chhole bhatura, the Triple Schezwan fried rice if you want heat.

Best coffee shop

Black Sheep Lounge

Specialty coffee roaster and café in downtown Welland, steps from the recreational canal.

Roasts coffee in-house, serves it within two weeks of roasting. Known for weekend bagel sandwiches that draw a line out the door before 10am. Recognizable from the 40-foot multicolour mural on the building exterior. Rotating lineup of local musicians, art on the walls, the community-hub kind of café Welland needed.

Open Tuesday through Sunday, 8am to 4pm. Closed Mondays.

What to order: the peameal bagel sandwich, a pour-over, anything from their pastry case.

How we picked these

We started with the restaurants that consistently rank in the top tier across multiple review platforms (Tripadvisor, Yelp, Restaurant Guru, Google), cross-referenced against what locals actually recommend on Reddit, Facebook community groups, and in conversations with people who live here.

We confirmed every listing is open and operating, verified addresses and hours against official sources, and noted recent ownership changes where they apply.

We didn’t accept any payment, sponsorship, or comped meals for inclusion on this list. We update it as new spots open and old ones close.

A few things we left off (for now)

A list of eight isn’t comprehensive. A few categories we want to fill out in future updates:

  • A serious sushi or Japanese spot
  • A standout Vietnamese or Thai restaurant
  • The best fish and chips in town
  • The best burger
  • Niagara College’s student-area spots
  • New openings we haven’t tried yet

If we missed your favourite, reply to this newsletter and tell us where to go next. We read every email.
